Stress is a common experience in our daily lives and how we deal with stress varies from moment to moment. The type and intensity of stressors a person feels is unique to their own life and situation. Stress can have a significant impact on our mental health and well-being. When stress becomes chronic, it can lead to anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. It is essential to understand the relationship between stress and mental health. Seeking to understand your level of stress allows for the development of strategies for managing stressors and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Here are some tips for managing stress and maintaining good mental health:
1. Identify your stressors: This awareness can help you develop strategies for managing stress. Take time to create a list of things that trigger stress in your life and begin to think about how you can minimize or even diffuse the stressor altogether.
2. Develop healthy coping mechanisms: You likely have some of these tools in your toolbox, but remember to make time for coping mechanisms like exercise, spiritual practices, uplifting relationships, spending time in nature, service to others, etc.
3. Prioritize self-care: Self-care is not selfish. Make time for activities that bring you joy whether it’s reading a book going for a walk, or spending time with friends and family. Set aside time each day for self-care even if it is only for a few minutes.
4. Practice Mindfulness: Being in the present moment is so simple, yet so often we forget its value. When we can notice what we are feeling or experiencing in the present moment, we can respond wisely to situations as they occur.
5. Get enough sleep: So many people are challenged with sleep issues and getting enough sleep can be difficult, however 7 to 8 hours of sleep can have a positive impact on our mental health.
6. See professional help: if you are feeling overwhelmed or struggling with mental health issues seek professional help. Talk to your medical provider or a mental health professional to discuss your options.
