Decluttering

Coming off of a busy holiday season can leave us feeling excited for a new start. The holidays can bring an overwhelm and it is possible that this overwhelm and overabundance of stuff can impact your stress level. It is the physical stuff, the events, the gatherings, the baking, the lists, the gifts, expectations, worry, and much more that can send us spiraling into feelings of stress. We often think that once the holidays are over things will slow down and the stress will go away. There is an interesting amount of research that indicates that the more stuff (physically and metaphorically) we have surrounding us, has a direct impact on our mental health. As we move into the new year, think about decluttering as a way to start the new year fresh.
1. Declutter your things. Decluttering is not just for the springtime. The new year is a great time to look through things you have and find places or donate to others who may need them. In turn, this creates room for any new things you may have received this year.
2. Declutter your mindset- Try to let go of any unrealistic standards or expectations you've set for yourself. Focus on attainable goals for the year and make being present a priority.
3. Declutter your obligations- There is nothing wrong with choosing to slow down your pace for this coming year. In fact, choosing to do less can often lead to a much more enjoyable, relaxed, and stress-free year for you and your whole family. Say "yes" to the things that matter most, not the things you feel guilted into doing.
