In South Dakota, we kick off the school year mid-August and this transitional season can be both exciting and stressful.  As parents our supply lists include includes providing love, protection, emotional support, structure, healthy meals and a consistent sleep routine.  Mental health plays a pivotal role in back-to-school basics. A few common stressors for students  include academic pressures, social dynamics, managing time, staying organized and keeping up with activities and transitions.  These stressors can trigger uncertainty, pressure, feelings of isolation, exclusion and anxiety.

As parents and caregivers we can shine a light on these stressors and promote positive mental health.  Here are a few areas to focus on:

·      Open communication:  Encourage open conversations about feelings, fears and expectations.

·      Establish routines:  Consistent routines provide a sense of stability.  Encourage time for rest, play, study, chores, physical activity, family time and hobbies.

·      Set realistic goals:  Help children with goals that prioritize personal growth rather than perfection, noticing the progress and supporting the processes.

·      Encourage self-care:  Teaching and modeling self-care includes getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, engaging in physical activity and mindfulness.

·      Promote Healthy Relationships:  Healthy relationships at home invite healthy relationships in community.  Teaching our children by modeling empathy, active listening and recognizing another who may be struggling is invaluable.
